The first tarp, which was shredded by a storm

The first tarp, which was shredded by a storm

When our initial home inspection revealed the presence of lead paint, we called Brian Banks with Spectrum Analytical Services Inc.  He specializes in detection of lead paint and other such “hazardous materials.” Our house was off the charts.   In 2010 the EPD decreed that although a home owner could work on these materials, a hired contractor could not without risking heavy fines.  Therefore, we hired Bobby Presnal, owner of Eviromasters, to be our “ghost/lead busters.”  Bobby sent this amazing abatement team lead by an intense, knowledgeable supervisor named Reggie. These guys hung a huge tarp over the house, put on their space suits, and went to work.  The front of the house was stripped using high powered water and baking soda, and this was possible because the boards fit closely together, and did not overlap.  The boards on the side were overlapping, therefore it was not possible to save them, and they had to be removed.  All the trim on the windows and doors, all the baseboards, all the mantels and anywhere there was lead paint, had to be scraped by hand.  These guys worked long hours for three months to remove every bit of lead paint for the house to pass inspection.  It took many days of residue clean up to pass the white glove test.  The house was spotless!

Although the abatement process was a tedious, expensive, and long process, it was not without silver linings.  It exposed some structural flaws in the foundation, and we discovered beautiful heart pine trim that will never be covered with paint again, at least as long as we are there.  An added bonus is we got to know some really hard working guys.
