Kellan, Brennan, Jordan, and Megan Halloween of 1994 in Lakemont subdivision.

Preparations for Halloween festivities were in full swing in 1996 shortly after we moved to 190 Old Hwy 85.  Costumes were ready, several large bags of candy were bought, and three pumpkins were in process of being carved.  In our Lakemont subdivision we expected up to 200 trick or treaters.  I don’t know what we were thinking, so we’ll blame it on tradition.  190 Old Hwy 85 is on a dirt road, and the houses are spread apart, so to our disappointment we had zero children come to our door.  We did make adjustments like returning to visit our old neighborhood, and we didn’t buy any more candy.  Denise, our realtor, had a friend who recently moved to College Street, and she tried to warn us that we should be “seriously ready” for Halloween.  She was so overwhelmed and unprepared her first year, even after living in PTC, that last year she counted the number of trick or treaters.  Amazingly this tally was north of 1500 children.  Yikes!  Going from 0 to1500 pirates and princesses leads Mike and I to think we need to make Halloween candy a line item in the budget!

Darex Navoure Herring was the first neighbor that we met.  It was obvious from the beginning he was a bit attached to the house, and probably attached to the previous  owners as well. He inquired immediately about our intentions for the house. When we told him we had purchased it, and were planning to renovate it, he quickly said, “I come with the house.”  Darex has done several odd jobs around the property, and we hope to have an ongoing relationship with him when we get settled.

Skeleton volleyball on College Street

Our neighbors down and across the street began their Halloween decorations with a full volleyball game in the front yard.  Each day they added something new, and by the time Oct. 31st arrived it was quite the gruesome scene.  Another neighbor had a dance floor and D.J. Mike and I were “seriously ready” with our 2000 pieces of candy, and our amazon prime costumes.  The building stage of our house had it’s own creepy ambiance with the whistling wind blowing the plastic hanging on the front door and wires sticking out from the wall.  In fact, several little kids asked, “is the house haunted”?  We quickly replied, “yessss, – but only for a short time”.  Several kids asked about Thing 1, and we told them he was tearing up the inside.  The steady stream of kids seemed never ending as we passed out a variety of candy.  We would not have survived if our friends and neighbors, Ken and Michelle Speir had not rescued us for about 45 mins.  The police blocked off the entire street that night from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Amazingly enough the street was cleared as quickly as it had been filled. So many sweet princesses, super heroes, zombies, scream characters, and other creative costumes!  Can’t wait until next year!
