The house was built in the 1850’s as an antebellum white home. It was square, with four bedrooms upstairs and four rooms downstairs. The exterior was cypress because it had excellent resistance to humidity and termites. The original kitchen was remodeled to be used as the master bedroom, and the original master bedroom became the kitchen. The house had been repaired several times, and had both four inch and six inch boards of various types of lumber that were used for siding. It was, as Pat would say, “like Africa.” It looked good from a distance, but up close, it needed some work. And that was before we saw the foundation up close. These photos capture the stately appearance that we loved.

Prep before the Master Addition with a Porch

September 2, 2014 – A Lot Of Progress

In order to preserve the historical fabric of the original frame of the house, we chose to protect the beams with one inch R-10 board, then cover with spray in foam insulation.  For a while we had a tudor style house.

Felt Wrap on Southwest Side

Jerrel recommended old fashioned felt wrap in order to seal the house and make it energy efficient. The felt was covered with cypress siding to match the original wood.

September 6, 2014

The front of the house got a fresh coat of primer to protect it from the elements.  We are planning to stain the natural wood on all of the exterior doors.

We chose cypress siding because it matched the original.

Cypress Wood

Tony and his crew put up the wood siding while they still had the cherry picker because it was too tall for ladders.  The painters came primed the wood and painted the top of the house as well.

Close Up of Brick with New Mortar

All the brick on the chimneys have been pointed up, and the liners have been replaced.  They are all in good working order.  The mortar is in the process of drying and takes a good 30+ days to completely dry out and lighten in color.

Taking Shape

Lots of progress, sorry for the delay.  We had a very rainy April but Jerrel was still able to get the outside paint scheme moving along.
